Elizabeth
Character

Elizabeth Bennet is one of Jane Austen's most endearing heroines. Her successes as well as her failures are dear to the heart of many lovers of 19th century literature. At a time when the behavior of women was expected to be, in every way, polite and restrained, Elizabeth is a shining example of the true female spirit conquering despite the rules of society.

She is the second eldest of four daughters and her father's favorite. She is spirited, kind, and attempts to think the best of almost everyone, but she is equally willing to trust a person's word so far as to believe bad things about the person without any further proof of wrongdoing. Her mistaken opinions of Mr. Darcy lead to much confusion and prejudice on her part, though she also has a strong enough character to admit her mistake. Throughout the book she proves her inner strength and refuses to give up or be pushed into anything by someone else.
