INFORMATION
Written by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings was the sequel to The Hobbit. Though it was published in three parts (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King) from 1954–1955, Tolkien considered it to be more of one large work than the trilogy many modern fans consider it. Middle-earth is a world that is amazingly complex, with such varying cultures and other details that it doesn't matter how long you have been a fan, there is always something new to learn or some interesting way of looking at something that you'd never quite noticed before.
A LIGHT FROM THE SHADOWS
The fanlisting name, A Light From The Shadows, comes from the line "a light from the shadows shall spring" in a poem mentioned in The Fellowship of the Ring. Though the poem itself, written by Bilbo, was about Aragorn, I think the line is also a good description of the story as a whole. Throughout the "trilogy" everything seems to be surrounded by a shadow (other than just Sauron) that threatens to overcome everything the characters are struggling for, but then from some of those very shadows eventually comes light. Life is hard, but sometimes hope can be found in the most surprising places.
