Greek Mythology

The oral tradition of Ancient Greece, Greek mythology is one of the most widely studied mythologies today. Many of the stories that survive are from sources like Homer's Iliad or Hesiod's Theogony, and from the writings of historians like Herodotus.

Examples of the more well known of the Greek gods and goddesses are Zeus, the ruler of Mount Olympus, Poseidon, god of the oceans, Athena, of wisdom and war, and foam-born Aphrodite, goddess of love.

The Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses was a history based on Roman and Greek myth, and is an example of how there are strong connections between Greek and Roman myths. Often the only difference is the names used (ex. the Roman Diana is closely identified with Artemis and the Roman Jupiter the equivalent of Zeus).
