Hebrew Mythology

Many people don't think of many of the more influential religions as having their own mythology, and indeed the members of any specific religion rarely likes to look at it that way, but the word 'mythology' does not necessarily imply that the stories are untrue. Any religion with stories relating to their past/origin/etc. is a religion with its own mythology, and the Hebrew mythology is one example of one that is commonly overlooked (even though it is shared between Jews and Christians, among others).

Below are some examples of Hebrew myths, both widely known stories and some lesser studied ones.

The Story of Susanna is one of my favorite Hebrew myths, though I certainly never heard it when I went to church. Found in the Apocrypha, Susanna was a beautiful and pious Jewish woman. Her husband was wealthy, and often had influential visitors. Two of these visitors were elders of the people, men who had been appointed to be judges. They came frequently to her husband's house, and seeing her every day began to lust after her. When she would sleep with neither of them, they falsely accused her of adultery, claiming they saw her with a young man in her husband's gardens. With the word of both judges against her, Susanna was sentenced to death. But she trusted the Lord to save her, and he stirred the spirit of Daniel. He shouted loudly and got the people's attention, and then he took the two judges apart from one another, questioning each individually before the people. He asked each under what tree he saw Susanna under, and each gave a different answer. The judges were punished, and the innocent blood of Susanna saved.

Lilith is a more widely known "mythological" character, being the first wife of Adam (yes, Eve's Adam).
