The word 'myth' is derived from the Greek muthos. Myths are stories that have been passed down from person to person and often holds special meaning. Though myths are generally accepted to be 'only' stories, there is often some degree of fact behind them, and the word 'myth' does not in itself mean that the story is not true. Mythology is closely associated with religion, and generally each culture's myths are connected to specific religion(s). For example, Celtic mythology could be associated with Paganism, while Hebrew mythology can be tied to Judiasm and Christianity.
